Urges All People of All Ages to Recognize Their Risk for Pneumonia
and Think “Prevention” of This Potentially Deadly Disease

What and Who: PNEUMONIA. Most of us have heard about it, but what do we really know about this serious and sometimes deadly disease? For starters:
* Pneumonia, including pneumococcal pneumonia, can strike any person at any age, anywhere, and at anytime. Adults 65 years of age and older are at increased risk because your immune system naturally weakens with age.
* Cold air and bad weather cannot cause pneumonia. Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs that is primarily caused by viruses, bacteria, or fungi that are transmitted from one person to another person.
* There are many types of pneumonia, and pneumococcal pneumonia is the most common type of bacterial pneumonia.

Thursday, November 12th is World Pneumonia Day. Dr. Jorge Rodriguez wants adults age 65 and older– and to recognize their personal risk and think prevention. His message is especially critical for Hispanic adults, because research shows that they are less likely than their Caucasian counterparts to report receiving preventive health services. Disparities in access to health care, education, and linguistic barriers can play an important role in this gap.

Dr. Jorge Rodriguez wants to help all of your listeners and their families and friends become more aware of the steps they can take to help protect themselves from serious infectious diseases, like pneumococcal pneumonia, including:
* Managing chronic conditions such as diabetes or COPD
* Maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle
* Keeping up with good hygiene, including regular hand washing, to help reduce the risk of spreading infection
* Talking to their doctor about their personal risk and whether they are up to date on their vaccinations

Having attended the University of Miami School of Medicine, Dr. Rodriguez chose to pursue Internal Medicine having completed his internship and residencies at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami and at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. He finished his medical education with a fellowship in gastroenteritis at Baylor School of Medicine in Dallas and currently divides his time between two practices in Southern California.
