LITERACY ADVOCATE/AUTHOR: Danielle A. Vann, is an internationally award-winning author, former television personality and national literacy advocate, she is best known for her internationally award-winning Young Adult four-part series, The Whizbang Machine.
Forty-four per cent of our nation’s adults are reading and writing at a fourth grade level. What’s more, it’s even scarier nearly 20 per cent of high schoolers graduated last year without even knowing how to read.
But guess what—-the White House has released its proposed budget for 2019 that slashes federal funding for a vital tool in education— libraries and museums.
Danielle A. Vann, a Dallas-area crusader on behalf of reading, an award-winning novelist of young adult books and a former television personality, is on a mission to stop this campaign against literacy.
“Regardless of your politics, you have to know that an illiterate public is an anathema to our Democracy,” said Ms. Vann. “When it comes to our children, we need to storm the barricades against illiteracy.”
Ms. Vann is taking her message to the public, to educators, to school and state officials—anyone she can button-hole to lobby or reach with her public speaking activities and YouTube videos.
The cutback in funds for libraries and museums will, according to Ms. Vann’s research, greatly impact public libraries, public and charter schools, and public universities around the country.
The proposed Fiscal 2019 budget contains significant cuts to federal library funding as well as eliminating the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
Ms. Vann is the author of the Whizbang Machine young adult series of books, as well as numerous other titles for which she has received Texas, national and international awards. She speaks often at various area schools and is known as “The Storyteller”.
A former television presenter, she represents an interesting guest for your television or radio broadcast program as well as an fascinating profile for an issues-oriented print publication.
Ms. Vann is prepared to answer questions on her campaign for literacy in Texas and nationwide, and how she plans to impact decisions at both the State and National levels.
