He was a walk-on on the wrestling team at Penn State but his true passion was numbers. To stretch the dollar, he took a heavy course load and graduated in three years.
Hunter then served in the Navy for two years where he worked to verify computer calculations. He modeled and programmed an airport noise that was a smashing success and was adopted for the US government.
He earned a PHD in Math from Northwestern.
