November Marks “National Family Caregivers Month”
Leaders in Aging Aim to Celebrate Those that Provide Invaluable Care and Love to Older Adults
Loneliness among older adults has been a longtime issue for many years. Since the practices of social distancing were put into place due to COVID-19 restrictions, the damaging impacts of social isolation have been forced into the spotlight, with several notable publications reporting that loneliness can be more detrimental to health than smoking 15 cigarettes per day. While caregivers have always played an important role in the lives of their loved ones, many have had to uncover ‘outside the box’ ways to bring joy and comfort into the lives of their loved ones. This November, we celebrate their efforts – and discuss unique solutions – during National Family Caregivers Month.
Family Caregivers are tasked with one of the toughest jobs there is. They are often on call 24/7 with little support. According to the Caregiver Action Network (CAN) more than 90 million Americans care for loved ones with chronic conditions, disabilities, disease, or the frailties of old age. Introducing new care techniques, and embracing new technologies that can help caregivers, benefits both patient and caregiver.
Studies have shown that connections through play, joy, and happiness – ultimately reduce the cost of care and improve the quality of life for older adults, their loved ones, and their caregivers.
