“Life, with Cancer – the Lauren Terrazzano Story” -Paul Lonardo

TOPIC-“Life, with Cancer – the Lauren Terrazzano Story”

the co-author of a book due out this fall that I wanted to bring to your attention, in hope that it might be a topic of interest (lung cancer and women) at some point on your program. “Life, with Cancer – the Lauren Terrazzano Story” is a biography about a remarkable woman and social journalist for Newsday. Lauren shared a Pulitzer Prize with her colleagues for coverage of the TWA Flight 800 crash off the shores of Long Island in 1996, and numerous other awards for her social journalism, including the Anna Quindlen Award for Excellence in Journalism for her work on stories about Children and Families. Because of this connection, we are fortunate to have had Anna Quindlen write a foreword for this book. Lauren was considered a non-smoker by her doctors (smoked infrequently for only a couple of years) when she was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2004 at the age of 36. For threee years she battled the disease, several rounds of cancer treatment, the removal of a lung, and from october 2006 until her death in May 2007, she wrote a weekly column in Newsday, titled, Life, with Cancer. In it, she shared her experiences with cancer, the treatment, the higher incidence of the disease in women, the research being done, personal reflections, as well as the stigma associated with the disease. I wrote this book with Frank Terrazzano, Lauren’s father, who wanted to share Lauren’s life as an inspiration to young journalists and all women, as well as to shed light on a highly stigmatized disease, which kills more women each year than breast, ovarian and uterine cancer combined. Life, with Cancer – The Lauren Terrazzano Story” is scheduled for release by November, which is national lung cancer awareness month. http://www.amazon.com/dp/0757316638
