With flu season in sight, local healthcare providers at MedExpress say now is a great time to get a flu vaccine. Though last year’s flu season was milder than the record-breaking 2017-2018 season, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 37.4 to 42.9 million people were still diagnosed with the flu and more than half received medical attention for their symptoms.

Getting a flu vaccine is the best way to avoid contracting and spreading the flu. Yet, healthcare professionals are concerned that people may assume a flu shot is unnecessary this year given that last year’s flu season was less severe than previous years. The CDC recommends an annual flu vaccine for everyone over six months of age (with rare exceptions). Flu vaccinations can reduce doctors’ visits and missed days from work and school, as well as prevent flu-related hospitalizations. And as children go back to school and families begin to congregate indoors as the weather cools, flu spreads more easily, so healthcare professionals say now is the time to get your flu shot.
