She was the first self-made female millionaire in America. Born Sarah Breedlove, but known as Madame C J Walker, she was an African American product of the South in the late 1800’s.

She worked the cotton fields in Mississippi, worked in kitchens, and was a washer woman. She did it all.

Then, as she said, she promoted herself to business woman.

Like many entrepreneurs she found a problem and solved it. Her hair was falling out, like many women of that era, and Madame Walker decided to do something about it. She developed special hair care and other beauty products strictly for black women.

And boy did THAT work. After selling her products door to door, revenues kept getting bigger and bigger. She started a mail order house and finally sold Madame Walker’s products nationwide.

Nothing stopped her. Not the color of her skin. Not being a woman.

Her secret to success was her determination and drive.

The rest, as they say, is history.
