ERIC HOLDER AGREE ON
CRIMINAL JUSTICE EXPERT: Kevin Ring, is the Director of Strategic Initiatives for Families Against Mandatory Minimums (FAMM). He is also author of Scalia Dissents: Writings of the Supreme Court’s Wittiest, Most Outspoken Justice.
For more than 40 years, conservatives have been associated with “get tough” anti-crime policies, including stiff mandatory minimum sentencing laws.
Today, however, a new generation of conservative leaders is promoting a new approach that is tough on crime without being tough on taxpayers. Right-leaning governors and state legislators have championed reforms that have reduced both crime and prison populations at the same time.
Now the debate has shifted to Washington. Will conservatives lead the fight for smarter criminal justice policies? Three conservatives who experienced federal prison firsthand shared their views on why conservatives are championing reforms that improve public safety and reduce costs in an event on Capitol Hill.
Speakers included FAMM’s Kevin Ring, Washington Times’ David Keene, American Conservative Union’s Pat Nolan, Former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik, and special guest Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI), Chair of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security, and Investigations.
ABOUT: FAMM (Families Against Mandatory Minimums) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization fighting for smart sentencing laws that protect public safety. We see a country where criminal sentencing is individualized, humane, and sufficient to impose fair punishment and protect public safety. Our supporters include taxpayers, families, prisoners, law enforcement, attorneys, judges, criminal justice experts and concerned citizens.
What FAMM Does…
By advocating for sensible state and federal sentencing reform, FAMM helps:
(1) Lessen the burden of overcrowded prisons on taxpayers…
(2) Shift resources from excessive incarceration to law enforcement and other programs proven to reduce crime and recidivism…
(3) Mobilize those whose lives are harmed by unfair prison sentences to work constructively for change…
BIO: Kevin Ring brings more than 20 years of conservative public policy, campaign, and issue advocacy experience to FAMM. He began his career in Washington, DC as a legislative aide on Capitol Hill.
