BACKGROUND:
Our understanding of COVID-19 is evolving daily. What we know today is that the virus is a multi-organ disease, affecting more than just the lungs. It also affects the heart, kidneys and pancreas. More recently, doctors are seeing neurological symptoms in COVID-19 patients, including stroke, indicating disruptions to the central nervous system as well.
DID YOU KNOW?
Neurological symptoms occur in up to 45 percent of people diagnosed with COVID-19. Being able to identify these symptoms and why they occur is important.
Although some people may be at higher risk of developing neurological complications of COVID-19, the neurological impact does not appear to be limited to high-risk groups.
Physicians and scientists at Northwestern Medicine are working hard to learn as much as they can about COVID-19, including increasing our understanding of the symptoms and long-term effects of the virus, in order to provide the best care possible to patients and help find a cure for this disease.

Dr. Babak Jahromi is a dual-trained neurosurgeon at Northwestern Medicine, with extensive experience in endovascular and cerebrovascular surgery. He holds fellowships from the Universities of Miami and Buffalo, and a PhD from the University of Chicago. His work has been widely published, with over 200 papers, abstracts and book chapters to date.
