Environmental Attorney & Activist, Founder of Global High Seas Marine Preserve and Author of Space & Ocean Exploration: The Alternative to the Military-Industrial Complexwww.GHSMP.orgIn the midst of writing his latest book, Space & Ocean Exploration, Danny Quintana found out just how truly dire the state of fish stocks in oceans around the world had become over the last half-century. Industrial fishing has become extremely efficient at stripping the oceans of life. Thus top-of-the-food-chain marine predators, along with the other species caught in the hunt or being sought after, are rapidly vanishing, this will be a major blow to the ocean ecosystem. If we stay on this course of overfishing, the ocean fisheries and ecosystems will collapse. The consequences will be mass starvation, economic chaos and armed conflict globally. The people in the developing world who depend on the fish for protein will attempt to migrate. The central premise of the book is re-directing U.S. defense spending for space and ocean exploration and using the same defense contractors and communities. The Global High Seas Marine Preserve was a natural extension of that concept. Danny saw the banning of industrial fishing in international waters as required to stave off a collapse of the great ocean fisheries. It is an optimistic message that is realistic. Tuna, shark and whales and other top-of-the-food-chain marine predators are being hunted in international waters by legitimate and rogue operators. While regulating territorial waters has succeeded in many countries, there is no international enforcement to stop illegal fishing or targeting of endangered species beyond the 200 mile national exclusive economic zones. The proposed Global High Seas Marine Preserve would be a collective global effort. The U.S. Navy would take the lead in concert with other maritime forces under a U.N. Mandate, to patrol international waters and prevent the industrial fishing ban from being violated. This will be a paradigm shift, a true environmental game changer that would put humans and nature in balance. At least 70 percent of the oceans would be protected from over fishing. 50 Sustainable Seafood Cities Campaign: In an effort to target the demand side of the fish equation, the GHSMP is conducting an extensive campaign targeting the 50 largest cities in the United States. We have a congressional candidate that will introduce national legislation to mandate that only seafood products from sustainable sources be sold in the United States. But we need to succeed with the 50 cities campaign as the ground work for national legislation. For more information about GHSMP 50 cities campaign go to www.SaveOceanLife.com.
