“It’s been known that since at least 2015, social media has been linked to teens having suicidal thoughts and a correlating rise in teen suicide. This is a national tragedy. Although Instagram and Facebook aren’t the only factor involved in this spike, they must take real action to remove the damaging content that spurs this growing epidemic. We must hold Facebook accountable but also realize that parents are setting up their kids for potential self-harm and even the risk of suicide through allowing unrestricted access to social media apps like Facebook & Instagram where profit, even at the expense of teen safety, is job #1.”

3. Former Facebook employee Frances Haugen stated on 60 Minutes on October 4, 2021: “…Facebook makes more money when you consume more content. People enjoy engaging with things that elicit an emotional reaction. And the more anger that they get exposed to, the more they interact and the more they consume.”  Do you think Facebook and Instagram contribute to anger between teens and facilitates bullying between kids, leading them on a path sometimes toward suicide and self-harm?

4. October 3rd through 10th is Mental Health Week. Is the risk of mental illness in teens largely the province of parents or are the tech giants largely responsible for escalating mental illness in adolescents?
