There are many charities that are working on rescue and relief efforts for the victims of Hurricane Harvey. There are multiple smaller local charities, good Samaritans, and of course larger organizations like The American Red Cross, The Salvation Army, UNICEF, Amnesty International, etc. However, it is The American Red Cross that I recommend you DO NOT donate to.
News analyst Josh Bernstein is available to be your Talk Show interview guest to explain. Josh says that The American Red Cross is the equivalent of The Susan G. Komen Foundation. Both of these organizations are more concerned with profits than helping people. The American Red Cross only gives 39% of what they collect in donations towards the cause they are trying to help. In contrast, The Salvation Army gives nearly 95% of what they collect in donations towards the cause.
The CEO of the ARC has absolutely NO experience with non profits and came straight from Corporate America. Gail McGovern has a salary of over $600,000 a year and most of her assistants are paid about $100,000 a year. In contrast, the average salary of a Salvation Army Manager is $30,000 a year.
The ARC has also had its share of controversies regarding reporting and spending practices…
For instance, after Hurricane Sandy a FOIA request was blocked by their high-powered law firm who said they will not disclose where their donations were appropriated due to “industry trade secrets”? Or how about in 2015 when McGovern wrote a letter to Congressman Bennie Thompson pleading with him not to open up a Congressional review of how The ARC allocates its donations. Or the fact that Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley has accused the organization of “stonewalling” and “misleading” a Congressional investigation in The ARC practices.
There are many great, honest, and reputable organizations for Americans to give to however The American Red Cross is not one of them.
