Dr. Daniel Baxter, an internist at the William F. Ryan Community Health Center in New York City, has a new book being released ONE LIFE AT A TIME: An American Doctor’s Memoir of Aids in Botswana (Skyhorse: June 12, 2018).

Dr. Daniel Baxter is a front-line physician and HIV specialist at the William F. Ryan Community Health Center in New York City and the author of the soon-to-be-published memoir One Life at a Time: An American Doctor’s Memoir of AIDS in Botswana (Skyhorse: June 12, 2018). A board-certified internist, he worked for three years at the Spellman Center for HIV-Related Diseases in New York before spending more than six years in Botswana providing direct patient care, teaching healthcare workers, and mentoring physicians under the aegis of the African Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Partnerships (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, UNAIDS WHO and Harvard School of Public Health) . In 2013, he returned to Botswana for another two years to work at the country’s new medical school, heading up teams of residents and medical students at the country’s largest hospital, where, under very dire conditions, he cared for some of the sickest patient he’s ever seen, many with end-stage AIDS.

He returned to the U.S. in 2015 and has written — part memoir, part documentary, part travelogue, part reflection on his four decades in medicine, part chronicle of what he experienced in Botswana – in ONE LIFE AT A TIME: An American Doctor’s Memoir of Aids in Botswana (Skyhorse: June 12, 2018).

Dr. Baxter graduated from Ohio State University College of Arts and Sciences in 1971 with a degree in Chemistry. He was born in Lima, Ohio and moved when he was 5 years old to Wilmington, Ohio, just outside of Cincinnati. After receiving his medical degree from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, he completed his internship and residency at Case-Western Reserve University Hospitals of Cleveland.
