Dr. Hodges & Penney Cowan

Fibromyalgia affects up to 12 million Americans and is characterized by chronic, widespread pain, tenderness, fatigue and difficulty sleeping. These symptoms tend to vary in intensity over time. Despite the significant impact of this condition, the survey results show that people with fibromyalgia delay seeking help from a healthcare professional.

On Thursday, March 22nd, Beth Hodges, MD, a physician with Hodges Family Practice in Asheboro, N.C. specializing in fibromyalgia treatment, and Penney Cowan, Founder and CEO of the American Chronic Pain Association (ACPA) who herself suffers from fibromyalgia, will be available to discuss the implications of the surveys. They’ll also help the public learn how to support and empower people who have the condition.

Dr. Hodges is a passionate advocate for patient awareness. She is an associate clinical professor at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill School of Medicine and member of the American Academy of Family Practice, North Carolina Medical Society and American Medical Association. She also publishes academic works frequently. Penney Cowan founded ACPA in 1980. Over the past 30 years, Cowan has been an advocate and consumer representative for pain issues. She is the author of Patient or Person, Living With Chronic Pain, published by Gardner Press.
