Expert: March Madness Is Here! First Tournament For Sports Betting, How Much Money Will Be Flowing?

As March Madness gets underway, the gambling industry is set to make a splash. The American Gaming Association is projecting $8.5 billion in action this year, from both legal and illegal betting markets. So how much will the sports gaming space benefit from the nationwide college tournament?

Some March Madness Stats:
An American Gaming Association (AGA) report estimates as much as $10 billion wagered on the illegal market last year.
Last year alone, bettors put up more than $300 million on the NCAA Tournament through Nevada sports betting alone.
Despite the fact that seven states are allowing legal sports betting for the first time, fewer than one in 10 of an expected 47 million bettors nationwide will place their wagers legally — either through a casino sportsbook or an above-board app, according to an estimate by the American Gaming Association.
Play.USA is projecting that Nevada will lead the gaming space, raking in about $300 million for the tournament and NJ coming in second, taking in around $75 million.
Since legal, NJ saw $1.6 billion in wagers, as sportsbooks took in $112 million and the state raked in $14 million in taxes.
