Centers for Disease Control Says…

Women Commit 31% More Domestic
Violence Than Do Men

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ANALYST: Everett Bartlett the President of the Coalition to End Domestic Violence.

The Violence Against Women Act is up for a reauthorization in 2019. This reauthorization needs to be based on the latest surveys and scientific research.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control conducts an annual survey called the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS). The telephone survey asks about Americans’ experience with domestic violence.

Previous surveys have revealed near-parity between men and women in their rates of partner violence. But the most recent survey reveals a surprising shift: Men now are 31% more likely to be the victims of overall physical violence during the previous 12 months – 3.8% among men versus 2.9% for women (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey: 2015 Data Brief – Updated Release, Atlanta, Georgia. 2018. Tables 9 and 11.

EXAMPLE: Convicted killer Jennifer Morrissey sentenced to life in prison…

In victim impact statements delivered in court on Friday, the children of Michael McNew mourned their father, who was shot and killed in his Upper Makefield home in 2017. Jennifer Morrissey was convicted on a charge for first-degree murder in the killing last month and will serve a life sentence.

The relationship between Michael McNew and his daughter was strained over his involvement with Jennifer Morrissey, a woman half his age.

But by the summer of 2017, she said they had started to reconcile. Katie Anderson was pregnant at the time and her father was excited to become a grandfather again, she said.

But he never got that chance.

McNew, 64, was fatally shot in the face by Morrissey in what a jury determined was a planned, intentional killing when it convicted the 34-year-old of first-degree murder and related offenses following a week-long trial on Feb. 1.

Bucks County Judge Raymond F. McHugh on Friday sentenced Morrissey to serve the rest of her life in state prison without the possibility of parole, the state-mandated sentence for the charge.

ABOUT: Victims are being turned away, the innocent are being falsely accused, and families are being harmed. At the heart of the problem is a system that is based more on ideology than science or common sense. The system is not victim-centered, and it has created broad definitions, weakened due process, and removed the presumption of innocence. SAVE — Stop Abusive and Violent Environments — is working for effective and fair solutions to sexual assault and domestic violence.
