Feelings of hope and love are abundant during the holiday season – and they often do more for us than we think. In fact, they can be the best gifts to give to those impacted by serious ailments and medical conditions. A new survey conducted by the American Cancer Society found 3 in 4 (74%) Americans think the holidays are an especially hard time to talk about cancer with friends and loved ones, but there are ways to lift holiday spirits. Love is important – 77% of Americans think that it’s the trait most important to coping with cancer – but an “I love you” isn’t the only thing you can give someone who has been impacted by cancer this holiday season. According to those who have been impacted by cancer, hope (69%) is the emotion that most helped them get through cancer treatment.
Signaling a renewed, bolder stance in its work to support patients and families touched by cancer, the American Cancer Society has launched a new public awareness campaign – “Advantage Humans” – that puts people, and the collective power of our humanity, at the center of a shift to redefine victory over cancer. The aim of the campaign is to channel the range of raw emotions and unique human traits we all share to triumph over cancer every single day.
Spotlighted in one of the ads is former NFL player Chris Draft whose wife, Keasha, lost her battle to cancer in 2011. In interviews on Tuesday, December 15, Chris Draft will be available to discuss:
· His personal experience with cancer
· Simple “in-bound and out-of-bounds” ways to give hope for the holidays
· American Cancer Society’s new initiative to redefine victory over cancer and celebrate every day triumphs
About the talent:
Chris Draft is a nationally recognized community leader and health advocate who serves as an NFL Ambassador and a national spokesperson on many health-related issues, including lung cancer, the disease that claimed the life of his wife, Keasha. Through his work with American Cancer Society and his own Team Draft initiative, he is dedicated to raising awareness, accelerating research for a cure, and giving hope, comfort and inspiration to the patients, caregivers and healthcare providers who are battling cancer. Chris had a 12-year career in the NFL as a linebacker for the Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, St. Louis Rams, Buffalo Bills and Washington Redskins.
