Talking points —
Question: The American Psychiatric Association has long held to the Goldwater Rule with regard to what sort of opinions psychiatrics are allowed to give publicly. Tell us about that.
Answer: The Goldwater Rule states that it is unethical for psychiatrists to give a professional opinion about public figures they have not examined. The mental health professionals defaming President Trump are delighting in defying that rule.
Question: What condition do these medical professionals say plagues Donald Trump?
Answer: Narcissism. Yet it is the height of irony that these so-called mental health professionals are claiming that President Trump has a form of pathological narcissism. They should hold up a mirror to themselves. They are motivated by their own narcissism – turning themselves inside out to get media attention – and to promote their political agenda.
Question: But what about celebrities like Harvey Weinstein—isn’t he fair game for therapists to address publicly or at least to some degree?
Answer: Yes, but it is one thing to talk about celebrities and their psychological issues in order to shine a light on these problems for others (as I have done) and quite another thing to talk about the President of the U.S. – especially when their motives are nefarious. They are an embarrassment to their field and should be censured by their professional organizations, if not their licensing boards!
Question: But you can’t deny that there are some narcissistic issues that may be associated with President Trump.
Answer: In order to run for President of the United States a healthy amount of narcissism is required since they are trying to become the leader of the most powerful country in the world. If they do not believe in themselves strongly enough, they would never get the votes. Trump had 16 opponents – so he could never have vanquished them all if he did not have some degree of healthy narcissism.
Question: Touch on a few other traits of Donald Trump.
Answer: President Trump has many other personality traits that are very important for our country: perseverance, sincerity, altruism, a willingness to say what he believes even if it does ruffle some feathers, etc. Why don’t we hear about those positive traits more in mainstream news broadcasts?
Question: What impact do you think it is having by everyone from news anchors to mental health professionals waging relentless personal attacks against the character and psyche of President Trump?
Answer: By attacking President Trump, these mental health professionals are damaging their patients (who may not have the same political views, or who are turned off by their breach of ethics), damaging the trust that all patients will have in their therapists, damaging the reputation of psychotherapists, and stigmatizing mental illness.
