North Korea slams U.S. missile attack on Syria, says it justifies nuclear program

North Korea is dipping its toe into situation in Syria.

The country on Saturday decried the U.S. military strike against an air base in western Syria, saying the “unforgivable” attack justified North Korea’s growing nuclear weapons program.
“The U.S. missile attack against Syria is a clear and unforgivable act of aggression against a
sovereign state and we strongly condemn this,” a foreign ministry official said on the KCNA news agency. “The reality of today proves our decision to strengthen our military power to stand against force with force was the right choice a million times over.”

The U.S. launched the missile attack Thursday in retaliation for the country’s alleged chemical attack on Khan Sheikhoun, which killed about 100 people and injured hundreds more.

Syrian officials have denied using chemical weapons, insisting that one of its bombs hit a rebel-run plant that stores nerve gas.

KCNA reported that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un and Syrian President Bashar Assad spoke after the attack. Assad allegedly thanked Kim for understanding Syria’s effort to “meet such challenges as sinister actions of the world’s terrorists and encouraged Syria to successfully weather the crisis without fail,” the news service said.

Other Syrian allies — notably Russia and Iran — have condemned the U.S. attack.

But North Korea’s statements come as tensions grow between the country and the U.S. over the its fledgling nuclear weapons program.

The National Security Council has given President Trump two suggestions for responding to North Korea’s nuclear program: put U.S. nuclear weapons in South Korea or kill Kim, NBC News reported Friday.

The White House is hopeful China could put some pressure on the shut-in country to scale down on its nuclear weapons.
