(Golden Valley, MN) Racer-author, Robert Bakke, has a message for combat veterans who find themselves tormented from the horrors of war, “Jesus took the bullet for you…it’s going to be okay.” Bakke says his heart for combat veterans was born out of a service call to his home.
Shortly after a furnace repairman passed through Bakke’s garage and admired Bakke’s racecar, the repairman paused, lowered his head and in a soft voice said, “I’ve done some terrible things.” The repairman explained how he had served in Afghanistan and was now tormented with feelings of quilt, shame, and the fear of being condemned over some of the things he had seen and done. “He was afraid he wouldn’t be forgiven by God,” says Bakke, “And a massive amount of veterans are sharing the same pain.”
Why was Bakke chosen for such a sharing of the soul? Because along with all the bright colors that adorn his racecar, you’ll also find the words, “Robert Bakke ‘Performance’ Ministries.” Bakke’s image shattering ministry doesn’t stop there. He is also a jet captain, flies airplanes upside down and has a black belt in karate. He is also an avid bow hunter.
Put it all together, and Bakke’s ministry connects at a man-to-man level that opens people up, including veterans who are in-crisis and struggling for forgiveness. “There are few facts every veteran needs to know about God’s forgiveness,” says Bakke, “Both Moses and the Apostle Paul were murderers, and yet God chose them to write vast amounts of the Bible. Jesus took the blame for anything you could have done, and all your guilt and shame, and then took the bullet with your name on it. All you have to do is believe, and this truth will set you free.”
