MS affects approximately 400,000 people in the U.S. and 2-3 times as many women as men, raising significant concerns for women about their work, relationships and family planning, according to a recent survey amongst 1,000 U.S. females newly diagnosed with the disease, conducted by Teva Pharmaceuticals.
However, despite concerns about lifestyle topics important to them, 98% of women diagnosed with MS wish they had discussed topics with their doctor or other healthcare professionals at the time of diagnosis that weren’t covered. Additionally, 71% believe talking to their doctor earlier or more openly would have made their first 6 months after diagnosis easier.
To better understand what women experience early in their MS journey, Teva conducted the survey to identify what women worry about most when diagnosed. Can Do MS and Teva partnered together to create tools and resources to help empower women with MS to proactively engage more deeply/quickly with their healthcare team about these topics to drive better disease management. The content will be shared on MSCanDo.org.
During this satellite media tour, Dr. Travis and Anne Lee Gilbert, will share:
· Key survey findings about the top concerns women face at the time of diagnosis
· Top questions women wished they had asked their doctor when diagnosed, that in retrospect, would have better prepared them for life with MS
· Resources to help facilitate earlier and deeper discussions with their doctors about important topics such as work, relationships and family planning
· Other life-enhancing tips and strategies to help women fit MS into their lifestyle
