Getting Your WiFi Connection Ready for School

It’s the end of August – which means goodbye summer and hello new school year. As kids across America head back to the classroom – their free time gets replaced with homework, which likely has them using the Internet with much greater frequency. So whether your kids are already back-to-school or about to start – now is the perfect time for parents to learn how to keep their kids focused on schoolwork and their home network safe.

According to the NPD Group, U.S. households have close to 10 connected devices on average (everything from smart phones to computers and from streaming services to gaming devices), up from just over five devices in 2013. And, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development has estimated that number could rise to 50 by the year 2022! Network security has never been so important and also so misunderstood.

Wifi education and security expert, Nate Hardison, founder and chief technology officer at eero, is available to give parents a refresher course on all things WiFi – just in time for the new school year. During this tour he will discuss:
· What can parents do to get their homes ready for back-to-school online activities?
· It is estimated that in just over 5 years homes will have an average of 50 connected devices. Do more Internet connected devices in the home put a drain on the system? How can that strain be alleviated?
· All of these online devices can pull the focus from schoolwork. What are some easy ways to limit the time your child spends connected to a device?
· Your router is the entry point to your home network. How can you make sure you that your home network system – from family photos to credit card information – is secure?

INTERVIEW WITH: Nate Hardison, Founder & CTO (Hardware) at eero, head of eero’s hardware and embedded systems teams as CTO. Prior to eero, Nate was the second employee at Parastructure and worked as a preceptor in computer science at Harvard. Nate’s research has included network algorithms and security. He has a BS in Symbolic Systems with a concentration in Natural Language and a MS in Computer Science with a concentration in Networking and Security, both from Stanford.
