Lindsay Clancy’s Mistrial Became a Fight Over One Juror—Is Mob Pressure Replacing Justice?

The Lindsay Clancy trial ended in a mistrial after one juror refused to join the other 11 in finding her not criminally responsible for the deaths of her three children. Since then, holdout juror Michael Desronvil has faced reported threats and harassment. Now Clancy’s defense is asking the court to investigate his conduct ahead of a September 29 hearing.
Edward Bartlett says the case has moved beyond a disagreement over one verdict. In his new analysis, he argues that public pressure on a dissenting juror threatens the independence every jury needs to function.
Bartlett also points to comments from another juror who hoped the trial could help improve care for women. He asks whether a desire to advance a social cause—even a compassionate one—can affect how jurors weigh evidence in a criminal case. That juror has denied that her decision was biased.
