Police officers have had it rough over the past few years, between governments yanking away thousands of dollars in budget due to “defund the police” backlash, and previous President Joe Biden going against his word that he would give them the support they deserved.
Fortunately, current President Donald Trump is doing right by them – and now police officers are getting support again. There’s still a ways to go, but progress is progress.
In this Fox News article, Sgt. Betsy Brantner Smith (retired) noted the progress Trump was making in helping police officers after so many damaging executive orders from Biden was doing them harm.
“Since Trump has returned to office, it has really been, it’s been a burden lifted for law enforcement,” Smith noted. “And I think that this vilification of law enforcement is going to fade because politicians at the highest level are not going to go along with it anymore.”
It all began on day one of Trump being in office, as he signed the Executive Order on Initial Rescissions of Harmful Executive Orders and Actions. By doing this, several of Biden’s previous orders were wiped away – including one that both prevented authorities from obtaining surplus government weapons and other law enforcement equipment and being able to use force while arresting criminals.
Smith believed a “war on cops” was waged well back when Barack Obama was in office – but only became progressively worse once Biden believed the hype behind “defund the police.” But now, pro-police and law and order messaging is moving in a positive manner.
“And what that is going to do, albeit slowly, is help us recover from these last four years of police officers retiring early, or fleeing places like New York and Chicago and LA and going to places like Florida and Arizona,” she said. “And I think we’ll start to see young people interested in the profession again.”
Q&A:
- What do you think Joe Biden’s motivation was when it came to not providing the support that police officers needed? Was he buying too much into the “defund the police” hype? Or was it something else?
- How damaging do you believe these executive orders that Biden signed were to police officers as a whole? Does it serve as one of the core reasons why so many left their posts over the past few years?
- Do you believe Smith is correct in noting that Trump has made big stride forwards to pushing police back into a positive light, after everything that took place?
- What more progress needs to be made in an effort to get police back to where they were? Restoring budgets? Convincing Democratic leaders to give back the money they so viciously took away? Something else?
- Do you believe young people will be interested in becoming police officers again with the progress being made here?
