About the Author: Mark Kingston Levin PhD
Even at the age of seven, the idea of space travel fascinated him when a movie played at a
local theater about going to the moon. As a youth, he was a member of a school club whose
working model rockets entered successfully in competitions. He wrote published poetry, inspired
by the night sky, astronomy and his mother’s respected work as a poet. He devoured adventure
and science-fiction books, by such authors as Jules Verne, Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein,
Arthur C. Clarke and Poul William Anderson.
His strong interest in science is reflected in the choice of undergraduate studies in chemistry
and physics. After graduation from the University of Vermont, he worked on both the Apollo and
Mars space missions. He was part of President Gerald Ford’s science advisory team.
Hearing that Paul Dirac would be teaching at the Center for Theoretical Studies at University of
Miami, he jumped at the chance to learn from this outstanding theoretical physicist. After 2.5
years of study and research under Nobel Laureate Dirac, he obtained a PhD in quantum
mechanics.
Dr. Levin then applied his scientific background to business. Over the years, the two companies
he founded were awarded over 32 US patents. The most successful commercially was a sensor
detecting carbon monoxide that was widely sold. He also devised an instrument to detect
submarines under the ice, and a sensor that helped NASA determine where water might exist
on Mars.
In 2014 he retired to apply his ideas about science, technology, space and human relationships
to the writing of science fiction. His first book, 30th Century: Escape, took the Best Science
Fiction Book of the Year prize in the prestigious Irwin Awards in 2017. Book 2, 30th Century:
Revived, was published in 2018. Book 3 of the trilogy, 30 th Century: Contact, is scheduled for a
February 22, 2019 release.
