A Russian “troll farm” created a fake Instagram account @Native_Americans_United_ with posts rallying people against the Dakota Access Pipeline, it has been reported.
The Instagram account was run by Russia’s Internet Research Agency, which also created fake Republican Twitter accounts, paid 100 activists about $80,000, and bought Facebook ads that reached millions of people, Buzzfeed reported.
The account, which racked up more than 33,000 followers, shared social and political posts relevant to Native American issues as part of a wider effort to sow divisions within the U.S.
One post, which showed an image of a military cemetery, read, “If an oil company destroyed these ‘sacred’ burial grounds Americans would lose their minds.”–NY Daily News
