A BACK-TO-SCHOOL SURVIVAL GUIDE

BRAIN-BASED TIPS & ADVICE FOR PARENTS & KIDS

Right now, families across the country are struggling to navigate the new “normal” of learning. Parents and caregivers have always played an important role in education…and this year, their involvement is more needed than ever. Whether their kids are in the classroom full time, learning virtually, or doing a hybrid approach, it’s an incredibly daunting responsibility.

According to Neuroscience Expert Dr. Patrick Porter, families need all the support they can get.

“This school year is going to be tough and it’s as much of a challenge for parents as it is for kids. Families desperately need positive strategies to survive this new normal…”

…says Dr. Porter, who has devoted his career to researching the brain and mental wellness. Learning in the COVID era presents an array of challenges beyond technical difficulties and internet connectivity issues. Kids learn best when they are engaged in hands-on activities and it’s hard to translate those elements into an online platform or even a socially distanced classroom. In addition, many parents are now responsible for teaching and supervising their kids 24/7 while juggling their own demands at work.

So how can parents support their kids and ensure this school year isn’t a complete bust?

According to Dr. Porter, it’s important to pay attention to your child’s mental health just as much as their physical health. Although kids are resilient and adaptable, the sense of loss and uncertainty is very real. This kind of stress elevates cortisol levels in the brain which interferes with memory making it impossible to concentrate. In order for true learning to happen, mental clarity is crucial. He suggests having regular emotional check-ins with kids, even if they aren’t giving clear warning signs that there is a problem.

To make this challenging school year as seamless as possible, a few brief tips that Dr. Porter suggests include: establishing a sense of structure and stability at home, taking a “time-out” from school work every 75 to 90 minutes, and engaging in restorative activities like exercising and meditating.

Dr. Porter is sharing how parents can help kids (and themselves) cope with this school year. He has brain-based strategies and actionable advice for families and students of all ages.
